Whitby

Back

The lovely seaside town of Whitby was the target for our latest ride. You may have noticed that we have a fondness for all things wet, salty and sandy. The real reason for visiting the seaside so often is so that Bob can increase his collection of 'kiss me quick' hats and Chinny can buy more rock.

One road you must try if you are in the area is the A169 from Pickering to Whitby through the North York Moors, this road reminds me of the cat & fiddle near Buxton, loads of open moorland, a few nice bends but loads of bloody car drivers.

Whitby is an ancient fishing port that nestles between the North York Moors and the North Sea at the mouth of the River Esk. The town's skyline is dominated by the ruins of St Hilda's Abbey, high on the East Cliff. Spreading below, a maze of alleyways and narrow streets run down to the busy quayside. From the old town, 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St Mary, one of the finest examples of Anglo Saxon churches in the country, and whose churchyard gave Bram Stoker the inspiration to write his world famous book, Dracula.
